Mahogany Body
South American Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is by far the most common tropical wood used in guitar making today. Even though it also goes by the name of Honduran Mahogany, the species can actually be found throughout a region ranging from southern Mexico to Colombia, Venezuela and the Amazon drainage basin. Its color varies from reddish-brown to pink, salmon, or yellow-brown when fresh, deepening with age to deep, rich red or brown hues. Mahogany produces a deep bass tone with a strong mid-range, and is an optimum choice for mid-size and full-size guitars (including Orchestra Models, dreadnaughts and Jumbos). Because of its high stability, this wood is also ideally suited for building guitar necks.
